A case in context: From the Lebanese Civil War to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon has just heard the closing arguments in Ayyash et. al, on September 21, 2018; a case in which prosecutors charged four members or associates of Hezbollah with the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. Thirteen years after the assassination, judges are in the process of making their judgement.

Anthony Elghossain was a nonresident fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programs from 2017-2019.

Based in Beirut, Anthony was previously a Middle East program advisor at the United States Institute of Peace. Before that, he worked with non-governmental organizations to promote the rule of law in the Middle East and Africa and as a project finance lawyer at a global law firm.

Anthony enjoys writing about the states and societies of the Middle East. He has written for The New Republic, CNN’s Explore Parts Unknown, Roads & Kingdoms, HuffPo, Syria Deeply, the Carnegie Endowment, The National, The Daily Star, and NOW. Anthony holds a JD from The George Washington University Law School and a BA from the American University of Beirut.
