Rex Brynen is a nonresident senior fellow with the Middle East Peace and Security Initiative. He is also a professor of political science at McGill University. He is author or coauthor of Beyond the Arab Spring: Authoritarianism and Democratization in the Arab World (2012), A Very Political Economy: Peacebuilding and Foreign Aid in the West Bank and Gaza (2000), and Sanctuary and Survival: The PLO in Lebanon (1990). He is the editor or coeditor of eight other volumes; and author of more than forty articles and book chapters on Middle East politics, regional security, peace and stabilization operations, and conflict simulation. He is founding editor of the conflict simulation website PAXsims (http://www.paxsims.org), and a past winner of the International Studies Association’s Deborah Gerner Innovative Teaching Award.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Brynen has served as a member of the Policy Staff of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, as an intelligence analyst for the Privy Council (cabinet) Office, and as a consultant to other governments, UN agencies, the World Bank, and others.
