2010 Wroclaw Global Forum

Organized by the Atlantic Council, the city of Wrocław, and DemosEUROPA-Centre for European Strategy, the 2010 Wrocław Global Forum focused on the topic “Strengthening the Transatlantic Dialog to Tackle Global Challenges.”

Other partners included the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg opened the forum with a keynote address calling for greater U.S.-European cooperation on a range of global challenges, Other speakers included Estonian Minister of Defense Jaak Aaviksoo, eminent historian Norman Davies, Romanian National Security Advisor Iulian Fota,, and U.S. Ambassador to Poland Lee Feinstein. Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, also addressed the Forum on the future of NATO.

The inaugural Freedom Awards Dinner was held last year in Berlin on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. That evening, the Council presented awards to Secretary Hillary Clinton, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, and Admiral James Stavridis, on behalf of the people of the United States, Germany, and the allied troops. The Council also honored two champions of Central Europe’s struggle for freedom, Lech Wałęsa and Vaclav Havel.
