The Atlantic Council’s boardroom was at capacity for the off-the-record conversation with Italian Justice Minister Andrea Orlando
On April 22, the Atlantic Council hosted the Minister of Justice of Italy, Andrea Orlando, at a private breakfast with key stakeholders from the private and public sectors of the transatlantic community. Minister Orlando discussed the structural reforms going on within the Italian Justice system, particularly those that are affecting the international investment climate and those aimed at fighting corruption.
Director of the Global Business & Economics Program at the Atlantic Council, Andrea Montanino, gave the opening remarks to set the stage for Minister Orlando’s discussion of reforms occurring within Italy.
- Italy has moved up from eighty-three to fourty-four in the Ease of Doing Business Report from the World Bank since 2011.
- Under Orlando’s leadership, the Ministry of Justice has reduced the backlog of civil cases through the creation of specialized courts and alternative resolution mechanisms, such as tribunals and arbitration, which means payments to justice system are received faster.

- Vast improvement of the information sharing system has minimized redundancies and improved efficiencies within the justice system, and further streamlined the process of receiving payments.
- A new data bank to track performance of tribunals is creating competition between the tribunals and further increasing efficiency of the justice system. Peer review process of lawyers is beginning.
