Famine in the Horn: Assessing the US Response

Famine in the Horn: Assessing the US Response

On October 27, the Michael S. Ansari Africa Center hosted a discussion on the US response to the devastating famine in the Horn of Africa, featuring remarks by Nancy Lindborg, assistant administrator for democracy, conflict, and humanitarian assistance at the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Following the keynote address Bronwyn Bruton, deputy director of the Ansari Africa Center, and John Norris, executive director of the Sustainable Security and Peacebuilding Initiative at Center for American Progress, engaged in a follow-up discussion and provided their own assessments of the crisis. Moderated by J. Peter Pham, director of the Ansari Africa Center, the conversation focused on ongoing efforts by the US to alleviate the impact of the famine in Somalia, the long-term regional development and security implications, and coordination within the United States and among other donors.
