Finance for Growth
On November 3, 2016, the Atlantic Council’s Global Business and Economics Program held a panel discussion on how best to finance growth for Europe in Philadelphia. Mario Nava, then-Director of Financial System Surveillance and Crisis Management at DG FISMA, delivered the keynote remarks on how the Banking and Capital Markets Union support economic growth and integration in the EU.

Mr. Nava was joined on the panel by William Burke-White, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania; Sonja Gibbs, Senior Director for Global Capital Markets at the Institute of International Finance; Zdenek Kudrna, post-doctoral researcher at the University of Salzburg; and Francesco Valente, President & CEO of the Fincantieri Marine Group. Julie Chon, a non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, moderated the discussion.

An important part of the discussion was the report on the Capital Markets Union (CMU), written by panelist Zdenek Kudrna, that was launched at the event. The report explores how the CMU can unlock investment in Europe. Following the panel discussion, Mr. Nava led an expert lecture and discussion on how a single market for capital will not only improve the competitiveness and efficiency of European markets, but also benefit American and other overseas investors looking for investment opportunities in Europe.
