Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center Resident Senior Fellow Anders Aslund writes for the Kyiv Post’s “Doing Business in Ukraine” guide on why Ukraine’s once powerful oligarchs are rapidly losing money and power:

Often people do not notice the greatest developments. At present, Ukraine’s once so powerful oligarchs are rapidly losing money and power, but some commentators claim that they are stronger than ever. There is nothing wrong in being rich, but the playing fi eld must be level. Today that can be accomplished in Ukraine and many steps have already been taken.

Forbes magazine has assessed the net wealth of Ukraine’s oligarchs each March for several years. Only six Ukrainians were ranked by Forbes in both 2012 and 2015. Their total wealth is small by most international standards and so is their number. Presumably, Forbes has not caught all their wealth.
