Bloomberg highlights an Atlantic Council event with US Trade Representative Michael Froman and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel R. Russel on the path forward for the Trans-Pacific Partnership:
U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said Congress is likely to support the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement because it’s a better path forward than the “alternative reality” of not having it in place.
“I’m confident we’ll have bipartisan support ultimately for its approval,” Froman said Tuesday at an Atlantic Council event in Washington. He said the Obama administration would “take all necessary steps” to get it ready for presentation to Congress and passage.
Froman said China was “originally hostile” to the Asian trade pact, which it is not part of. To improve trade relations, the U.S. and China have been holding bilateral talks, he said.
