The Atlantic Council, held its annual dinner where over 300 influential political, media, civil society and business leaders gather to honor the Global Citizen Award recipients. This year’s event happened on Sunday, September 21 in New York City. The honorees this year included Mexican President Peña Nieto, former Israeli President Shimon Peres, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, former Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew as well as actor, director, producer Robert De Niro and pianist, composer, humanitarian Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner. Atlantic Council president and CEO, Frederick Kempe said, “Our honorees embody in dynamic and diverse ways what it means to be a global citizen. In their impressive careers, all have emphasized the need for a common community of values to advance peace, prosperity, human rights, and cultural understanding.”
Peña Nieto was the first Latin American leader to be awarded the prize by The Atlantic Council. The US nongovernmental organization, decided to honor the Mexican President for creating a governing mandate, known as the ‘Pacto por México,’ through extraordinary leadership and sweeping reforms in telecommunications, energy, education, labor and more. El Universal quoted Peña Nieto’s acceptance speech as he said, “Mexico wants to be at the top of these changes, and in the two years that I was in office, we decided to take a deep modernization that will allow us to move forward and change the character of our country.”
