Former Missile Defense Agency Director retired Lt. Gen. Patrick O’Reilly has thrown his support behind an industry initiative aimed at incorporating data from “nontraditional” sensors, even non-military ones, into NATO’s emerging missile defense network.
Industry officials from Europe and the United States discussed the proposal at a Jan. 30 meeting at the Brussels, Belgium, office of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The group, which included representatives from Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon as well as European defense companies Thales and EADS, hopes that the NATO Industrial Advisory Group will propose to the alliance that member states fund a study of the concept, O’Reilly told Inside the Pentagon in a Feb. 3 interview.
“This could be an initiative endorsed at the NATO summit meeting later this year, but it doesn’t have to be,” according to O’Reilly, who is a senior fellow with the Washington-based think tank Atlantic Council. A decision about whether NIAG will be tasked with a study is expected within a month, he said.
