Former NATO Ambassador joins International Security program

Washington, D.C. – The Atlantic Council is pleased to announce the appointment of former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker as a Senior Advisor and member of the Council’s Strategic Advisors Group, a body of U.S. and European security experts established to make policy recommendations for NATO and other transatlantic defense issues.

“With Kurt Volker we gain the expertise of one of the most experienced diplomats and gifted thinkers on NATO and the U.S.-European relationship,” said Atlantic Council President and CEO Frederick Kempe. “He will contribute significantly to the Council’s work on a new Strategic Concept for NATO.”

Volker served for 23 years in the U.S. government, under five administrations. As Ambassador to NATO, he worked for Presidents Bush and Obama, coordinating preparations for NATO’s 60th anniversary summit. He previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs; Director for NATO and West European Affairs at the National Security Council; Deputy Chief of Staff to then-NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson; and legislative fellow on the staff of Senator John McCain.

Founded in 1961, the Atlantic Council aims to renew the Atlantic community for 21st-century global challenges through constructive U.S.-European leadership and engagement in world affairs. Led by Senator Chuck Hagel, Chairman, the Atlantic Council embodies a network of policy, academic and business leaders who foster transatlantic ties through non-partisan and cross-national discussions and studies.
