Canadian foreign minister: After Putin’s annexation ‘our strategy won’t change’ on Ukraine

By Daniel Malloy

At an Atlantic Council Front Page event, the foreign minister reassured Ukrainians that Canada will never recognize the sham referendums in four of Ukraine’s regions—and that Canada will continue to support Ukraine.

Conflict NATO

Alongside the United States, Canada has played a role in rallying and maintaining Western support for Ukraine, while also confronting and condemning Russia for its illegal, unprovoked, and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. Canada has committed $3.4 billion in assistance to Ukraine so far this year, including $1.95 billion in financial loans, $626 million in military aid, $320 million in humanitarian aid, as well as an additional $96 million in development assistance.

What role does Canada play in continuing to support Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Russia? What can the international community do to pursue accountability against Russia, particularly on conflict-related sexual violence and its persistent violations of international humanitarian law? How can we best address global issues like food and energy security, as well as the impacts of Russia’s disinformation and false narratives?

Frederick Kempe, president and chief executive officer of the Atlantic Council, opened the discussion with Minister Mélanie Joly, minister of foreign affairs of Canada, and moderator Jim Sciutto, anchor and chief national security correspondent for CNN, on Canada’s solidarity with Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression, and how to further support Ukrainians as they defend their homeland, fight for their freedom, and work to rebuild their future.
