The Atlantic Council is pleased to host a private workshop on US nuclear energy and prospects for advancing US export of advanced reactors on Monday, May 19, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM ET. The roundtable will take place at the Atlantic Council’s new global headquarters (1400 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20005).

Last year, the Atlantic Council’s Nuclear Energy Policy Initiative convened a group of experts to explore how to strengthen the US leadership position in the civil nuclear export market. Participants determined that there is little appetite for US companies to consider any international business models like “Build Own Operate” for new nuclear tenders. However, it is essential that US companies can make competitive offerings in the international market as Russia and China often offer integrated, full-service models to newcomer countries.

In this workshop, participants will consider any regulatory, legal, or policy obstacles to US companies that seek to deploy their reactors abroad. We will explore whether existing tools meant to facilitate the competitiveness of US civil nuclear reactor exports are sufficient but under resourced, or whether new support (e.g. financial, organizational, legislative) is needed. Furthermore, this discussion will occur against the backdrop of discussions regarding the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the US Development Finance Corporation.

The event will take place following the Chatham House Rule.
