Please join the Atlantic Council for “Veterans Day 2020,” a celebration of military service that features the premiere of a short film depicting veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan amplified by keynote remarks by General David Petraeus. This first annual event, which will be introduced by the Council’s Executive Vice Chair Adrienne Arsht and hosted by the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s Forward Defense practice, will take place on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST via Zoom. To receive the Zoom link, please register by clicking the REGISTER button above.

“Veterans Day 2020” is a short film commissioned by the Council and adapted from the stage play “War Words” by Michelle Kholos Brooks, an award winning playwright and nonresident senior fellow of Forward Defense at the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. “War Words” tells the funny, strange, heroic, and heartbreaking stories of men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan based on the playwright’s interviews with veterans of those wars and their families. The filmed adaptation has been produced in partnership with Washington’s Arena Stage theatre, and was directed by the company’s deputy artistic director, Seema Sueko. Following the screening, the playwright, director, and one of the veterans whose story is depicted in the film will join executive producer Steve Grundman for a panel discussion about their artistic collaboration and the larger civic purpose these works can serve shortening the distance between veterans and ordinary Americans.

“Veterans Day 2020” is a unique opportunity to celebrate veterans and deepen our relationships with them. It represents the latest installment of Forward Defense’s ambition to generate unique insights by the application of creativity and the arts to the exploration of international security affairs as part of its Art of War pillar.
