On Monday, November 7, the Atlantic Council hosted a discussion with the US Ambassador to NATO, Ivo H. Daalder.
In the context of a global economic crisis and a major deployment of allied forces in Afghanistan, NATO succeeded in enforcing the United Nations Security Council mandate to protect civilian lives in Libya. Ambassador Daalder discussed the significance of this historic NATO operation and its impact on the future of the transatlantic alliance.
Ambassador Daalder was appointed United States permanent representative to NATO by President Barack Obama in May 2009. He was a director for European affairs on President Clinton’s National Security Council staff from 1995 to 1997, where he was responsible for coordinating US policy toward Bosnia.
Prior to being appointed to his current position, Ambassador Daalder was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution, specializing in American foreign policy, European security and transatlantic relations, and national security affairs. Ambassador Daalder was educated at Oxford and Georgetown Universities, and received his PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
