On October 28, the Atlantic Council’s International Security Program hosted Grete Faremo, Minister of Defense of Norway, for a public address and conversation.

Minister Faremo discussed Norway’s perspective on emerging security challenges in the Arctic and how the region’s security can be strengthened in concert with the U.S., NATO, and partner nations in the region. 

Grete Faremo became Minister of Defense in 2009, after many years of senior level government service. She has served as Norway’s Minister of Oil and Energy, Minister of Justice, and Minister of Development Cooperation. She has also served in senior positions in private industry, including as the Microsoft Director of Corporate Affairs for Western Europe. The Minister also has extensive experience from the non-profit sector, having served on the boards of several organizations, including the Norwegian People’s Aid, the Afghanistan Committee, and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.
 
Minister Faremo’s remarks are part of the Atlantic Council’s new Transatlantic Initiative on Nordic-Baltic Security. Supported by experts from the region and Washington, the initiative provides policy relevant advice and insights on how to further strengthen security in the Nordic-Baltic region and how the region can play a larger role in transatlantic and global security.
