European Commission

Introduced by:
David O'Sullivan

Moderated by:
Frances G. Burwell

With the backdrop of continuing conflict in Ukraine and looming Russian pressure across Europe’s East, EU leaders met in Riga on May 21-22 for the 2015 Eastern Partnership (EaP) summit. Discussions at the summit focused on advancing reforms and multilateral cooperation projects.

As Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn has been at the forefront of the EU’s efforts to promote stability at Europe’s borders while deepening the EU’s relationship with its southern and eastern neighbors. In his first visit to the United States after the Eastern Partnership summit, Hahn will provide an outlook on what was achieved last week, and will comment on the EU’s efforts to move forward after Riga, in spite of continuing and significant pressures.

Johannes Hahn has served in his current role since November 2014. He previously served as European Commissioner for Regional Policy in the second Barroso Commission. A native of Austria, Hahn is a member of the Osterreichische Volkspartei (OVP) and is also a Vice President of the European People’s Party (EPP).
