President Jair Bolsonaro kicked off his 2018 presidential campaign claiming China was “buying Brazil.” Now, over 100 days into office, the Brazilian president has sought to soften his tone. Adopting a more moderate approach to China, President Bolsonaro will visit Asia’s great power later this year. Ahead of his official trip, Vice President Hamilton Mourão is in China this week meeting with government and private-sector representatives and attending the China-Brazil High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Committee (COSBAN) meeting.
