The Data and CRM Specialist administers the Council’s instances of Salesforce and other business systems supporting capabilities such as email marketing (Marketo) and events management (Microsoft PowerApps and Sharepoint) in coordination with the director and deputy director of the digital and data team. To do this successfully, the incumbent in the role effectively deploys quantitative, qualitative, and interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with Atlantic Council research programs and centralized support departments such as events, communications, development, and finance to manage, administer, and consult on the Council’s Salesforce instance and integrated processes and platforms. The Data and CRM Specialist role sits on the Digital and Data Team within the Atlantic Council’s Engagement Team.

A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and organizational skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, technical skills, knowledge, and training, and enjoys the complexity of maintaining and building new and rapidly growing business and information systems. The position requires a strong understanding of CRM and databases and the proven ability to use technological tools and SaaS to advance the goals of an organization.

The Engagement Team connects the Council with domestic and global audiences through proactive campaigns based on strategies anchored in media relations, editorial production, marketing operations, digital, and data. The Engagement Team regularly executes high-profile public events with VIP speakers, secures top-tier media coverage of our research and breaking news analysis, and runs core systems and processes across websites, email marketing, social media, content production, data analytics, and more.

Job responsibilities

  • Serve as primary Salesforce administrator for the enterprise Salesforce environment with 100+ users and the “Events Central” events management platform and process (a custom- built solution using Microsoft Power Apps and Sharepoint to connect internal business processes with engagement tools like Salesforce, WordPress, and Marketo)
  • Handle all basic administrative functions including user creation and maintenance, modification of page layouts and record types, generation of reports and dashboards, creation of new fields and lightning pages
  • Help manage relationships with key external vendors providing consultation and support in areas related to CRM
  • Manage (and coordinate with external vendors to implement, maintain, and troubleshoot) Salesforce integrations with other platforms for the website, event registration and sign-up forms, event management, email marketing (Marketo), and donation processing
  • Collaborate with engagement team members and program staff on audience analysis data projects enabling leadership to make data-driven decisions
  • Identify and pitch process improvement opportunities to stakeholders and implement them after approval through collaboration with the Engagement Team, Development, and Finance.
  • Gather detailed requests for improvements or changes to processes and integrations; map out, pitch, and manage the implementation of these changes as appropriate
  • Regularly research and advise colleagues on issues on data integrity and data cleanliness best-practices
  • Document functionality and train new users and grow the Salesforce skill set across the organization
  • Identify, install, and maintain appropriate apps from the AppExchange
  • Automate processes using Salesforce tools such as process builder, workflows rules and actions, validation rules, and Nonprofit Success Pack features such as engagement plans and levels
  • Build Salesforce reports to inform budget and finance processes


  • Minimum of one year of Salesforce administration experience required
  • Demonstrated history of successful work in data-driven projects, particularly in the areas of business intelligence or public engagement and marketing required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including confident communication in written prose, verbal presentations, and other standard modes of office communication required
  • Excellent project management skills required
  • Ability to synthesize data into clearly communicated insights using written prose, graphical representations, slide presentations, and other techniques required
  • Demonstrated interest and ability in quickly learning and implementing new technologies in collaboration with end-users required
  • Ability to critically evaluate and prioritize information gathered from multiple sources and reconcile potentially conflicting directives required
  • Salesforce Administration Certification ADM201 preferred
  • Interest in and knowledge of international issues or nonprofits preferred
  • Experience with Marketo or email marketing operations a plus
  • Coding, scripting, or programming and database skills in any languages or frameworks (Microsoft stack preferred) are a plus
  • Interest in user automation and organizational efficiency is a plus
