We seek an Email Marketing Assistant to join the Digital and Data team at our growing, mission-driven organization. As Email Marketing Assistant, you will support the Atlantic Council’s email marketing strategy and marketing automation platform. You will support our Marketo users to create and execute email campaigns and maximize our ability to leverage existing tools to elevate our overall email marketing strategy.

The position requires strong cross-organizational and collaborative skills and an understanding of email marketing audience segmentation to advance the goals of our organization. The Atlantic Council uses Marketo to produce and distribute email-based content such as newsletters, breaking news alerts, event invitations, publication announcements, original videos, and donation solicitations and uses Salesforce as its CRM platform.

In your day-to-day work, you will be responsible for supporting the essential email marketing operations initiatives within our organization to include managing our email calendar, developing new email designs, and optimizing email content layouts with content developed by our editorial team and subject matter experts. Experience with Marketo or similar marketing automation tools is required. You will play a role in implementing and measuring A/B testing plans. You will also support efforts to further build and segment our database. This position is eligible for telework.

This position is based in our Washington, DC headquarters on a hybrid schedule.


  • Support internal teams with email design and campaign execution/optimization in our marketing automation platform (Marketo).
  • Build smart lists with subscriber preference selections, email lists, suppressions, targeted segmentations.
  • Segment lists and campaigns based on behavior: past email engagement, website interactions, and subscriber demographic data.
  • Support the development of our subscriber growth strategy to increase subscriptions.
  • Implement A/B testing plans and measure campaign success.
  • Create new users and adjust permissions for Marketo.
  • Develop documentation and road maps for email best practices and Marketo user trainings.
  • Develop, enforce, and assist in campaign quality control practices to ensure processing completes in a timely manner and the output is accurate and complete.
  • Monitor and maintain our subscriber database cleanliness (append, merge, purge) for email deliverability.
  • Identify and troubleshoot data quality issues, automations, and integrations in Marketo and
  • Identify opportunities to automate processes for efficiencies.


  • 2-3 years of email marketing experience and an understanding of audience segmentation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience in major Marketing Automation systems (Marketo preferred).
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and email design required.
  • Comfort in a deadline-driven environment with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships at all levels of an organization and work successfully with them.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multi-step, detail-oriented projects in a fluid environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
  • Skilled in clear, persuasive, and effective communications with various stakeholders including excellent written skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multi-step, detail-oriented projects in a fluid environment.
  • Experience with email marketing and web/email analytics.
  • An understanding of how marketing automation systems work and integrate with Salesforce and other systems.
  • CRM experience with Salesforce preferred.
  • Interest in and knowledge of international affairs and a commitment to the mission and goals of the Atlantic Council.
