Overview

The Atlantic Council seeks an organized, operationally savvy, experienced manager to serve as Senior Director, Programs and Strategy, reporting to the Executive Vice President, to manage programmatic operations, and support the Council’s 16 programs and centers to achieve their ambitious strategic goals.

The Senior Director will work with the EVP and program and center leadership to manage the administrative, development, financial, and other functions of the Atlantic Council’s programs and centers.

In concert with the EVP, this individual will streamline programmatic operations and integrate our organizational strategy throughout our programs, ensuring that the whole of the Atlantic Council is greater than the sum of its parts. The Senior Director will work with the EVP to sharpen program strategies and leverage interconnectivity across the organization and provide bandwidth to the Executive Office to take on additional opportunities and manage challenges as they arise.

The successful candidate will have a deep geopolitical, cultural, and economic understanding and passion for transatlantic affairs and US-allied engagement with the wider global community. The Senior Director will work with the EVP and Executive Office team to facilitate and steward additional funding opportunities for programs across the private sector, high-net-worth individuals, and other entities.

A proven track record of global project management is required, and having strong networks among policymakers in Washington, Europe, and beyond would be an advantage. The individual should be comfortable in a fluid, dynamic environment and bring a strong track record of management skills – organization, reliability, clear communication, and attention to detail – to the role.

Candidates who provide a strong writing sample will be prioritized for consideration. This role is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters.

Job responsibilities

  • Program Coordination and Oversight. This individual will play a key role in operationalizing the day-to-day coordination between the Executive Office and programs, supporting the President & CEO, EVP, and other Atlantic Council leadership with communications, financial management, development, convenings, and more. They will develop peer-to-peer relationships with colleagues across the Council to advance collaboration and knowledge sharing while ensuring maximum efficiency and impact.
  • Programmatic Design and Implementation: In coordination with the EVP and senior Council leadership, develop and implement new programming and initiatives to influence policy and impact the public debate across the Council’s programs.
  • Development/Business Development. Partner with the Council’s Development team to build programs’ financial base by pursuing opportunities with foundations, corporations, individuals, government agencies, and international organizations; integrate and execute programming and business development strategies; and develop concept notes and proposals.
  • Capacity Building. Coordinate between the Executive Office and the Council’s programs and centers to provide needed bandwidth for the President & CEO, EVP, and Chief of Staff to align the overall strategic vision of the Council with individual program objectives.
  • Business Development. In conjunction with the EVP, SVP of Global Partnerships and Impact, and program leadership, build and develop a robust pipeline of funding to sustain the organization’s healthy financial trajectory. This includes but is certainly not limited to renewing existing funding and identifying and securing new resources in support of the Council’s programs.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years relevant work experience in foreign policy/national security/defense, the private sector, government, and/or a non-governmental organization.
  • Impressive leadership and communication skills, experience and poise with large, fast-moving teams, and effective at building non-partisan communities of influence around key policy issues.
  • Extensive experience in project management and a proven track record of business development success.
  • An entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving and project management.
  • Superior writing/communication skills and outstanding interpersonal skills to work well with all levels of experience and influence, from interns to senior officials.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills, including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
  • Experience living and/or working abroad is required, and proficiency in languages beyond English is a competitive advantage and highly desired.
