Rafik Hariri Center Nonresident Senior Fellow Nabeel Khoury writes for the New York Times Opinion Pages on what the US role should be in the growing conflict in Yemen:

The Yemeni state has failed. A protracted war between the Gulf Cooperation Council and their allies against the Houthis will only exacerbate the chaos and the opportunity for extremists like Al Qaeda and ISIS to gain strength and build viable bases along the southern shores of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen, under such a scenario, will become a worse threat to U.S. and international interests than Afghanistan ever was.

On the other hand, if the Saudi-led military action fails, the Houthis will give Iran a foothold dangerously close to the mouth of the Red Sea.
