“Freedom – Our Shared Bond”

It was in Philadelphia, that President John F. Kennedy, in a speech to commemorate Independence Day on 4 July 1962, put forward a ground‑breaking idea. He proposed the creation of a Declaration of Interdependence to stand alongside America’s Declaration of Independence. He suggested that the principle of national independence should be complemented by the concept of mutual interdependence, of enduring ties spanning the Atlantic, building on the idea of the political west, the idea of forging bonds between states brought together by liberal constitutional principles.
