Atlantic Council Chairman to Co-Chair President’s Intelligence Advisory Board
Washington, D.C. – Senator Chuck Hagel, chairman of the Atlantic Council, was today appointed co-chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board (PIAB), the body responsible for oversight of U.S. intelligence agencies.
“Chuck Hagel’s knowledge of foreign policy and commitment to U.S. interests make him an ideal choice to advise the president on crucial national security and intelligence matters,” said former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft, a previous head of the PIAB and chairman of the Atlantic Council International Advisory Board.
Hagel is also a member of the Secretary of Defense’s Defense Policy Board, alongside Atlantic Council board member Dr. Henry Kissinger. He is a Distinguished Professor at Georgetown University and has been chairman of the Atlantic Council since February of this year, after serving two terms as a Nebraska senator from 1997 to 2009. He is a Vietnam combat veteran and an accomplished businessman.
Atlantic Council President and CEO Frederick Kempe praised the appointment, declaring, “Senator Hagel’s depth of experience and proven leadership record, both in and out of government, will be an asset to the president and the country. His appointment to such an important body will help ensure the safety and security of the Atlantic community.”
Founded in 1961, the Atlantic Council aims to renew the Atlantic community for 21st-century global challenges through constructive U.S.-European leadership and engagement in world affairs. The Council embodies a netork of policy, academic and business leaders who foster transatlantic ties through non-partisan and cross-national discussions and studies.
