Former Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker announced today the launch of the Task Force on the Future of Iraq. The Task Force seeks to refocus attention on the underlying drivers of conflict that must be addressed to stabilize Iraq, beyond the military defeat of ISIS.

Please join the Atlantic Council in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Tuesday, February 16 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for the Task Force launch. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero, and Ambassador James Jeffrey will reflect on how their experiences throughout the decade of US intervention in Iraq can be applied to stabilize the country. Dr. Nussaibah Younis will moderate the discussion, and all speakers will be available for interview on request. Find further details and RSVP here.

The Task Force comprises twenty-five top Iraq experts from around the world. Throughout the initiative, they will conduct fact-finding missions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Baghdad, and southern Iraq. They will consult with US and European policymakers in Washington, DC and Berlin. Finally, they will report their findings in November in order to recommend to the incoming US administration a long-term approach to the stabilization of Iraq.

Some of the key questions that will be addressed include:
•           The Future of the Popular Mobilization Units
•           The Status of the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq
•           Re-integrating Internally Displaced Peoples
•           Rehabilitating Iraq’s Sunni Community
•           Building Effective Governance
•           Reforming the Iraqi Economy
•           Re-Establishing Boundaries between Iraq and Regional Powers

Task Force members including Dr. Kenneth Pollock, Dr. Toby Dodge, and Dr. Michael Knights will also be available for interview on February 16 and 17.
