Polls show concerning effect of Chinese coronavirus charm offensive in Italy

Italy has a geopolitical problem. An April 7 opinion poll showed for the first time that Italians look more to China than to the United States as a potential international partner. The SWG research institute captured an unprecedented situation in the long-term transatlantic friendship as when asked, "Who should Italy look more to develop their international alliances outside of Europe?" 36 percent of Italians indicated China, while only 30 percent chose their historic American ally.

Mind the gap: Reducing gender gaps will foster long-term economic prosperity in Colombia

Significant lags in women’s economic and political empowerment remain in countries like Colombia. Having closed educational attainment and health and survival gaps almost entirely, the country still faces important gender gaps in economic participation and opportunity (a gap of 26.5 percent) and in political empowerment (a gap of 68.2 percent). Asian economic growth grinds to sixty-year halt on coronavirus pandemic, US adds five million more jobless

Economic growth in Asia will come to a halt for the first time in sixty years as the region grapples with the coronavirus outbreak, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said. More than five million new jobless were added to the US economy in a week. Japan declared a state of national emergency and plans cash payments for each of its citizens.

NATO allies have stepped up to help each other during coronavirus emergency

Although the coronavirus pandemic has strained the medical infrastructure and economies of countries across Europe and North America, NATO allies “are coming to the rescue of those in need,” NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană said on April 16. Despite initial focuses on the dire situation within each country’s own borders, Geoană reported that he has seen “this almost natural reaction to come to the assistance of our neighbors.”
