Has Venezuela reached a new tipping point? After over 100 days of protests and at least 92 dead, the country is now gearing up for a July 30 Constituent Assembly vote that would rewrite the Chavez-era Constitution, potentially erasing any last remaining democratic checks. This comes amid a continued humanitarian and economic disaster.

What else can be done by the international community? Even with the support of the hemisphere’s major governments, the Organization of American States has unsuccessfully sought to pass resolutions, most recently in June, condemning the violence and urging a restoration of the democratic order. The United States has levied additional sanctions on individuals and the Senate is considering a bipartisan bill to provide humanitarian assistance for the Venezuelan people. More international action is needed.

Join the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center on Friday, July 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (breakfast served at 8:30 a.m.) for a conversation with OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and expert panelists on the domestic and international ramifications of the country’s descent into chaos and new ways to involve the the international community in seeking solutions.

Breakfast will be served at 8h30 am. The conversation starts promptly at 9am.
