The Atlantic Council is delighted to invite you to a presentation of the European Global Strategy report followed by a roundtable discussion on the future of the transatlantic security partnership. The roundtable will on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

The report will be presented by Anna Jardfelt, director of the Swedish Institute for International Affairs; Björn Fägersten, researcher at the Institute; and Alessandro Marrone of the Istituto Affari Internazionali. To focus on the transatlantic security partnership more broadly, we will also have remarks by Rick Holtzapple, director for European Regional Security, Political, and Military Affairs at the State Department; and from Mathew Burrows, director of the Atlantic Council's Strategic Foresight Initiative, followed by an off-the-record discussion.

The United States and Europe have long been partners on security and defense issues, especially through NATO and in Afghanistan. That partnership now faces challenges, from declining defense budgets to uncertainty about NATO's role post-Afghanistan. The European Union's Common Security and Defense Policy has struggled, although it has engaged in a number of civilian and military operations abroad. In December, an EU summit will focus on security and defense policy, and looking ahead to fall 2014, Britain will host the next NATO summit. The European Global Strategy report outlines one possible path forward for Europe, but there is much work to be done in defining the way forward for the transatlantic security partnership.
