Though frequently in conflict with one another, the people of the Middle East overwhelmingly agree that America is recoiling from the region. They witness the withdrawal of US Naval Forces from the Persian Gulf, America’s reluctance to take sides in the Syrian civil war, and the Obama administration’s coolness towards the military regime in Egypt, and conclude that American engagement has waned. As America appears to withdraw, these Middle Eastern nations feel the burgeoning imprint of new powers stepping in to fill the strategic vacuum.

Yet, are these perceptions grounded in reality? Is the Pax Americana – first established after WWII, strengthened throughout the 1950s and 60s, and capped by Kissingerian diplomacy and the collapse of the Soviet Bloc – over?

Ambassador Michael B. Oren (Ret.), ambassador-in-residence at the Atlantic Council, will seek to identify what truths, if any, lie behind the impression of a superpower in retreat, and point out America’s new paths in this crucial region.
