Panelists from Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines offer their lessons learned in countering AI-fueled Chinese influence campaigns, including the role of fact-checking organizations, media literacy initiatives, and other civil society efforts.

On Tuesday, October 20 at 8:00 a.m. ET, the Indo-Pacific Security Initiative (IPSI) of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security will host a virtual seminar on how first island chain countries can harness civil society and multilateral cooperation to build resilience against artificial intelligence (AI)–enabled influence operations.

This event is part of IPSI’s Cross-Strait and Beyond Seminar Series, which informs the public debate on key issues for Taiwan and the United States, held in partnership with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States.

As AI makes influence operations faster, cheaper, and more targeted, democracies across the Indo-Pacific face growing efforts from China to exploit social divisions and shape public discourse. Speakers will offer perspectives from Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines on lessons learned in countering these campaigns, including the role of fact-checking organizations, media literacy initiatives, and other civil society efforts. The panel will also explore opportunities for the United States and its regional partners to share best practices, coordinate policy responses, and strengthen collective resilience.
