Top News: Brotherhood Calls for Demonstration to “Protect the Revolution”

The Muslim Brotherhood’s Secretary-General Mahmoud Hussein announced that the group will participate in a million-man demonstration in Tahrir Square on April 13 aimed at "protecting the revolution” from attempts to restore power to the former regime.

ELECTIONS: 

2) The presiding judges in a case challenging the eligibility of presidential candidate Khairat al-Shater recused themselves on April 11, after being accused of bias against the defendant. 4) The People’s Assembly devoted a special session on April 11 to debating proposed a draft “disenfranchisement” law originally proposed by the moderate Islamist Wasat Party that would bar former regime members from competing in the presidential l election. Several MPs expressed concern that the bill what be deemed unconstitutional, because it contradicts Article 26 of the SCAF’s constitutional declaration, outlining candidate eligibility criteria, which does not cite affiliation with the former regime as grounds for disqualification. CONSTITUTION: 

6) The Freedom and Justice Party’s legal advisor Ahmed Abu Baraka announced that the party will appeal a verdict issued by the Supreme Administrative Court that challenged the constitutionality of the 100-member Constituent Assembly and suspended its work. Baraka said the verdict was flawed and violates the separation of powers between the judicial and executive branches.
