On June 5, the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security and the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) held a conference on NATO in a New Security Landscape.
Speakers outlined emerging trends in the contemporary global security environment, external security challenges for NATO as well as internal challenges for NATO cohesion, the strategic importance of NATO partnerships in the twenty-first century, and how the transatlantic community can best posture itself to face the global rebalance towards Asia.
The conference drew expertise from both sides of the Atlantic. Speakers included Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy Daniel Chiu, Norwegian Ambassador to the United States Wegger Chr. Strommen, Deputy National Security Advisor Julianne Smith, Director of the Research Division at NATO Defense University Karl-Heinz Kamp, and IFS Head of the Centre for Transatlantic Relations Johannes Ro.
This conference kicked off the Atlantic Council-IFS project on NATO in an Era of Global Competition, and served as the first of three public events examining NATO’s challenges and opportunities in the 21st century security environment aimed at developing fresh ideas and engaging concepts for strengthening transatlantic security cooperation.
