The Atlantic Council launched this annual lecture series in 2005 to honor the memory of the Atlantic Council's former President, Christopher Makins. This event brings together top European and American minds and policymakers to discuss the state of the Atlantic partnership and its future direction. By providing a platform for discussion and by stimulating provocative discourse on the importance of the Atlantic alliance, the lecture carries on the heritage and vision of this extraordinary Atlanticist.

This year, join us for remarks by and a conversation with Timothy Garton Ash, Professor of European Studies in the University of Oxford, moderated by Frederick Kempe, President and CEO of the Atlantic Council. Professor Garton Ash is also the Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is the author of nine books of political writing or 'history of the present' including The Magic Lantern: The Revolution of '89 Witnessed in Warsaw, Budapest, Berlin, & Prague; The File: A Personal History; In Europe's Name; and Facts are Subversive. He writes a column on international affairs in the Guardian, which is widely syndicated, and is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, amongst other journals. His latest book Free Speech: Ten Principles for a Connected World will be published in 2016, and he leads the thirteen language Oxford University research project Freespeechdebate.com. Awards he has received for his writing include the George Orwell Prize.

Previous transatlantic leaders who have delivered the Makins Lecture include Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski, President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Dr. Henry Kissinger, Lord George Robertson, and General Brent Scowcroft.
