In July 2024, China unveiled a long-awaited slate of reforms following a year of disappointing growth, mounting property sector troubles, and increasing global pushback. How far will these reforms go in addressing China’s deep-rooted economic challenges?
We invite you to join the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center and Rhodium Group on October 9 for the launch of the 2024 China Pathfinder Annual scorecard titled “End of the line: The cost of faltering reforms”. The project explores how China’s economic system compares to advanced market economies and evaluates the cost of delaying structural reforms. The 2024 report marks the culmination of this generation of research, dating back to 2021. This edition will present all new data on the inner workings of the Chinese economy.
Since 2021, teams from Rhodium Group and the Atlantic Council have collaborated to create a data-driven framework for understanding China’s economic trajectory. China Pathfinder scores China and other leading economies across six economic areas—financial system development, market competition, modern innovation, trade openness, direct investment openness, and portfolio investment openness. The 2024 edition shows that while China has made strides compared to its own past, it has hit a ceiling in key areas, and deeper structural reforms remain elusive.
Josh Lipsky, Senior Director of the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center, will give opening remarks. Daniel Rosen, Founding Partner of Rhodium Group, will present the project’s key findings.
The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Melanie Hart, Senior Director of the Atlantic Council Global China Hub, Clete Willems, former Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economics, Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, and non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center, and Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, CEO of MCC Global Enterprises and CNBC contributor.
