Amid international condemnation and sanctions, Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro will be sworn in for a second term this Thursday, January 10. An outcome of what is widely considered last year’s fraudulent electoral event, Maduro will likely further consolidate his power as Venezuela slides deeper into institutional and economic collapse. As Maduro continues to tighten his grasp on the Executive, Judiciary and Armed Forces, the National Assembly – the only remaining democratic institution – will witness the arrival of a renewed wave of opposition leaders committed to ending the crisis.
