US Department of State  Please join the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center and its Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security for a special discussion examining how a rapidly urbanizing world is shaping global governance, security, and diplomacy. This event serves as a prelude to a Megacity Security Conference to be held this November in Mumbai, India, hosted by the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center along with the India Foundation and the US Consulate General Mumbai. That conference will bring together high-ranking policy makers, prominent academics, policy practitioners, and security experts from across the world to discuss security challenges confronting megacities.

This event is being organized in cooperation with the US Department of State’s Cities@State initiative, which emphasizes the US government’s commitment to strengthening local leadership for global affairs.

This event will open with introductory remarks from His Excellency Arun K. Singh, Ambassador of India to the United States, and US Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro. They will be followed by a roundtable featuring Mr. Miguel Ángel Mancera, Mayor of Mexico City, and the State Department’s Ian Klaus, Policy Planning Staff, and Kathryn Schalow, Special Representative for the QDDR. Participants will discuss how megacities are reshaping the global system and how states must adapt to harness the forces of urbanization.
