Please join the Atlantic Council, in partnership with Adrienne Arsht and in collaboration with NBCUniversal News Group, on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. ET, for a conversation on reporters at risk in Ukraine and Gaza. An 11:00 a.m. ET reception will follow.

Two years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and five months into the Israel-Hamas war, the world continues to rely on journalists for real-time insights in the fog of war.

Reporters stationed on the frontlines undertake significant personal and professional risks to deliver the news, including physical, psychological, and political threats across assignments. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, since October 2023, dozens of journalists and media workers have been killed in the Israel-Hamas war and at least 15 have been killed in the last two years covering the war in Ukraine.

Yet, despite these obstacles, journalists persist. Why do they continue? What makes reporting worth the risk? How do they maintain courage through adversity, and how can we instill resilience in future generations of reporters?

This public event will convene leading journalists and media professionals to discuss their experiences covering the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and the role of resilience in their work. It will also serve to honor reporters at risk around the world, including Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich who nears one year in Russian detention on false espionage charges.

The program is open to press and will take place in-person at the Atlantic Council (1030 15th St NW 12th floor, Washington, DC 20005) and via livestream on Atlantic Council social media.

Please note that sections of this program will contain scenes from war that some may find disturbing.
