On Tuesday, August 18, at 11:30 a.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center hosted a discussion on the urgent needs of communities affected by Colombia’s August 10 earthquake.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the strongest to hit Colombia in decades, has killed more than two hundred people and left thousands missing. It has caused widespread damage to homes and buildings across Chocó, Caldas, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca, including hospitals and schools. Roads and other critical infrastructure have also been affected, leaving many of the hardest-hit areas with limited access to clean water, food, electricity, and communications.  

The Colombian government is leading the emergency response, while local businesses, civil society organizations, and citizens across the country have come together to support those affected. The United States and other international partners have also begun providing humanitarian assistance. As relief efforts continue, this event examines how the international community should continue to support Colombia as it recovers and rebuilds.
