On November 20, the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center will host retiring Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), chairman of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, to discuss his foreign policy work and his vision for a secure and prosperous Western Hemisphere.
Throughout his career, Cardin has played a central role in advancing Western-Hemisphere issues, including by authoring the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act—an act empowering the United States to sanction human-rights violators and corrupt officials worldwide, which later expanded into the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. Cardin has been a prominent voice on working across the aisle on regional migration challenges and in advancing US economic partnership in the Western Hemisphere.
This event will also acknowledge Cardin’s leadership as the honorary co-chair of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center’s US-Colombia Advisory Group, a role he served alongside Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN). In that role, Cardin has worked with the Atlantic Council and his co-chairs to advance a stronger, more resilient US-Colombia relationship given the country’s role as an historic US ally and a NATO global partner.
