Please join the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center on December 3 at 9:00am ET for a forward-looking discussion on the policies, innovations, and investments that could drive the transmission buildout in 2025.
2024 has been a consequential year in US grid policy, with developments including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Order 2023 on generator interconnection and Order 1920 on transmission planning and cost allocation, the Department of Energy’s National Transmission Needs Study and National Transmission Planning Study, and progress on the National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor process. However, challenges remain, including long permitting times, planning uncertainty, local opposition, siting issues, and supply chain disruptions. Currently, it takes over ten years on average to site, permit, and build a transmission line—far short of the capacity needed to meet climate goals, which demand a 60 percent increase in high-voltage transmission by 2030 and tripling the current transmission system of 300,000 miles by 2050.
This event will examine 2025’s key opportunities and obstacles for the transmission buildout, including potential actions by the new administration to accelerate deployment, bipartisan legislative possibilities, and strategies for funding, permitting, interconnection, planning, and innovation.
This conversation will take place in person at Atlantic Council headquarters and will be streamed on YouTube, X, Facebook, and LinkedIn. To receive the event information, please register using the form on this page.
