The Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center is pleased to invite you to a speech and conversation with Jay Shambaugh, Under Secretary for International Affairs at the US Department of the Treasury, moderated by Greg Ip, on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 10:00 am ET. Speaking ahead of the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund – World Bank, Under Secretary Shambaugh will deliver remarks on the future of the international financial institutions, including their role in fostering global growth and their importance to US economic security. 

2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Bretton Woods Institutions. Over that period, the IMF and World Bank have evolved continuously to meet the needs of a changing global economy. Over the last four years, a range of events including geopolitical shocks and a global pandemic have underscored the need for the institutions to adapt once again to fulfill their mandates. 

What are the United States’ goals for the Annual Meetings in Washington DC in October? How will the United States bolster the IMF and World Bank’s abilities to respond to today’s urgent economic challenges? What reforms are necessary to deliver sustained growth for advanced, emerging, and frontier economies alike? Under Secretary Shambaugh will join the GeoEconomics Center for a special event, which will be part of our Bretton Woods 2.0 Project, and launch our series of events during IMF-World Bank Week.
