This year has been a momentous one for climate change and the global energy transition needed to address it. It has witnessed a growing number of protests, with students around the world taking to the streets to activists disrupting major cities. It has also seen the emergence of the “Green New Deal” as a focal point of debate in US politics. All this while the world experienced its hottest June in recorded history and greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.

In making sense of these complex and often conflicting trends, we rely heavily on the skill and judgement of journalists. The stories written by energy and climate journalists serve to turn data points into narratives, and bring the risks of tomorrow into the consciousness of the present.

This discussion will feature three leading journalists as they shine a light on the practice and substance of covering these stories: Akshat Rathi, whose award-winning series “The Race to Zero Emissions” for Quartz masterfully deconstructs the energy technologies needed to secure a safe climatic future; Valerie Volcovici, whose incisive and timely coverage of US energy and environmental policy for Reuters is helping to frame the stakes of many debates; and Justin Worland, whose celebrated coverage of energy and environmental issues for TIME has helped shed light upon some of the more important and under-appreciated stories in the transition.
