Ignacio Vollmer S. is a member of the advisory council at the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center. He is chief executive officer of Mercantil, a multinational financial group with operations across Panama, Switzerland, the United States, and Venezuela, spanning banking, wealth management, insurance, and fintech. He also serves as chairman of the board of directors of Mercantil Banco in Venezuela.
Vollmer has held senior leadership positions across consumer and retail banking, commercial banking, and wealth management throughout his career at Mercantil. Before assuming his current role, he served as chief executive officer of Mercantil Holding Financiero, overseeing the group’s businesses in Panama and Switzerland. He is the founder of MFTech, Mercantil’s payments fintech, which has grown to more than two million customers since its launch in 2021. Before joining Mercantil, Vollmer worked in management consulting and investment banking at McKinsey & Company, Merrill Lynch, and Violy, Byorum & Partners. He serves on the boards of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, Universidad Metropolitana, the Development Council of Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, and Fundación Ideas.
Vollmer holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, with majors in finance and Latin American studies, and a master of business administration from New York University. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
