The New York Times quotes Africa Center Director J. Peter Pham on the Liberian president’s decree to stop mass rallies in Monrovia for the upcoming senatorial elections:

J. Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, said the president’s decree feeds into lingering distrust of the government.

“The impression is left that it is politically motivated, precisely because of Weah’s large support, precisely because of who his rival is and exactly who the president is,” he said.
