Please join the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security on October 6, 2014 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a public event featuring a conversation on the future of US extended deterrence in East Asia with The Hon. Richard L. Armitage, president of Armitage International and The Hon. Kurt Campbell, chairman and chief executive officer of The Asia Group. The speakers will discuss the key findings and recommendations for bolstering extended deterrence in East Asia from an Atlantic Council taskforce. Secretary Armitage and Dr. Campbell are co-chairs of the future of US extended deterrence in East Asia taskforce sponsored by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The objective of this taskforce was to examine the challenges and opportunities to strengthen US extended deterrence in East Asia over the coming decade by examining the evolving threat environment and new complexities in the international system.

This event is a public release of a brief Chairmen’s statement co-written by Secretary Armitage and Dr. Campbell, as well as an Atlantic Council report produced by Mr. Robert A. Manning, senior fellow at the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security. The Chairmen described the implications of the evolving strategic situation in East Asia, analyzed the perspectives of key East Asian actors on how ongoing development affect the credibility of US extended deterrence in the region, and offered recommendations on how the United States and its allies can enhance strategic stability in the region.
