American diplomat Arthur Houghton returned the surviving pages of the 16th century Shahnameh, the Book of Kings, to Iran in 1994, and revisited the country last spring for the filming of a documentary about this story. The conversation touched on this extraordinary saga and the ties that still bind the United States and Iran.

On November 18, the Atlantic Council’s Future of Iran Initiative hosted a conversation with former American diplomat Arthur Houghton, who returned the precious medieval copy of the Shahnameh or Book of Kings, to Iran. Houghton, who had visited Iran repeatedly before the revolution, returned to the country himself last spring for the filming of a documentary about this extraordinary story. Barbara Slavin, the director of the Future of Iran Initiative, moderated the discussion.
