In February 2020, Atlantic Council Senior Fellow Benjamin Jensen wrote a fictional account of a future battle for the Marine Corps Gazette, entitled “The Crisis: Operations in the South China Sea.” This exercise will anchor a series of forthcoming articles based on unclassified wargames at the Marine Corps University, which are intended to demonstrate different options and outcomes for joint maritime warfare in the future. Fiction offers an innovative tool to explore a variety of warfighting applications and escalation pathways.
