Preble on Net Assessment: A strategy-budget mismatch?

By Atlantic Council

On April 29, Christopher Preble and his co-hosts of the Net Assessment podcast debated the National Defense Strategy — at least the unclassified details that are currently available. They considered whether the professed strategy aligns with the budget, if either clearly signals the Biden administration’s priorities, and what it says that strategy documents are being rewritten but budget decisions have already been made. Preble posited that US strategy documents serve mostly to rationalize an $813 billion military budget, rather than inform and discipline hard choices about the allocation of limited resources.
