Matthew L. Ekberg is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center’s Economic Statecraft Initiative. Ekberg is a former senior advisor for regulatory affairs at the Institute of International Finance (IIF) and head of the IIF’s London Office.

Ekberg has led industry engagement on financial services regulatory matters concerning standards of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and the Financial Stability Board. He also led initiatives of national and regional regulatory/supervisory bodies across the Americas, Asia, Europe, Middle East/North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. His work focused on prudential standards for capital and liquidity, financial and nonfinancial risk, data policy, blended finance, conduct/governance, and financial technology.

Ekberg formerly led the IIF’s financial crime risk management practice, was representative to the Financial Action Task Force Private Sector Collaborative Forum, and served as a steering group member for the Europol Financial Intelligence Public Private Partnership in The Hague. He has also acted as sherpa to the Business 20 Taskforces on Finance and Infrastructure.

Previously Ekberg served as vice president for international policy at the Bankers Association for Finance and Trade , the international affiliate of the American Bankers Association in Washington, DC. He was also a representative to the Asia Pacific Financial Forum during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Finance Ministers’ Process. He holds degrees from George Washington University and George Washington University Law School.
