On Tuesday, August 5 at 3:00 p.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center and the Antiquities Coalition will host an event announcing the Antiquities Coalition’s newest Ten Most Wanted Antiquities object: a Ukrainian artifact from Mariupol that disappeared during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
One of the many grave casualties of Russia’s violence today is Ukraine’s cultural heritage, which has been intentionally targeted by the Russian military in the course of its assault on Ukraine. Today, a Ukrainian artifact created in approximately 6,000 BCE—the newest addition to the Ten Most Wanted Antiquities list—should be on display in a museum in Ukraine, as it had been up until Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Instead, Russia is using the artifact’s image in a propaganda exhibit to feign Kremlin claim over Ukraine’s sovereign land and history. The whereabouts of the physical object are unknown.
This event will include the official announcement of the addition of the Ukrainian object to the Ten Most Wanted Antiquities list and an expert discussion on the Russian war on Ukraine’s cultural heritage and the steps that international partners can take to protect culture and history in Ukraine and beyond. To join us in person or virtually, please complete the registration form.
